Finding The Perfect Red Wedding Dress

Updated on January 2, 2015

Red Wedding Dresses are Eastern Tradition

The popularity and traditional style of an eastern Red Wedding Dress is gaining popularity with designers of the West. Fashion Designer Vera Wang has designed a new line of red wedding dresses specifically for brides to be in China. Although the red wedding dress is a tradition for many Eastern brides, the color is catching on here in the West as well thanks to the melting pot of ethnicities in the States.

Chinese, Indian, Korean, Pakistan and Vietnamese brides choose red as a color that brings wealth, prosperity and represents auspiciousness.

It is also quite common for brides of different eastern cultures to wear more than one outfit during their wedding celebration. A white wedding dress may be worn for the ceremony while red is donned for the celebrations.

Choosing a red wedding dress does not have to be hard. Thanks to the increase in their popularity and the willingness of designers to work with the color, red wedding dresses are becoming easier to find.

Why Choose Red

A Color Doused With History

Red is a traditional Chinese wedding color. The homes of the bride and groom to be are decorated with the color red and red is the color of wedding invitations as well as gift wrap. Red symbolizes prosperity in Chinese custom.

The Chinese are not the only ones to wear red to a wedding. The Roman brides wore a red veil called a flammeum. The red veil warranted fidelity and love. It is common for Greek, Albanian and Armenian women to veils of red in the modeern weddings of today.

In Egypt and Central America, the color red is associated with cleansing and revival. In ancient Greece, red roses are assciated with Apollo who was killed on a hunting trip. The roses sprung from his blood and while they are associated with decay and growth they also stand for love and affinity. Romans attribute red roses to Aphrodite the godess of love.
